This past weekend, during halftime of the Free Jacks’ electric match against the Houston SaberCats, the crowd witnessed a moment that will forever be etched in the history of Major League Rugby. For the first time ever, an All Abilities rugby match took center stage — and with it, the Free Jacks proudly became the first MLR team to launch and feature an All Abilities team: Introducing the All Jacks.

Breaking Barriers: A First for Major League Rugby

Inclusivity has long been a pillar of rugby culture, but on Saturday, the Free Jacks raised the bar. The debut of the All Jacks marked a watershed moment—not just for the team, but for the entire league. While the scoreboard during the SaberCats clash kept fans on their feet, it was the halftime All Jacks match that truly stole the show.

This match wasn’t just an exhibition. It was a celebration of belonging. It was a testament to the idea that rugby is for everyone.

The All Jacks program is the result of a powerful partnership between the Free Jacks and the Boys & Girls Club of Dorchester, where weekly All Abilities rugby sessions have fostered connection, confidence, and community. These sessions welcome inclusion athletes of all abilities, giving them a space to discover the joy and values of rugby—teamwork, respect, discipline, and fun.

As Thomas Grant, Director of Community and Academy, put it:

The New England Free Jacks are proud to announce the return of Operation Sock Drop, our annual community-driven charitable drive supporting individuals and families facing homelessness. In partnership with Friends of Boston’s Homeless and Father Bill’s & MainSpring Yawkey Housing Resource Center, we’re calling on Free Jacks fans to help make an impact!

How to Participate

At our 2025 Home Opener on March 15—as the Free Jacks take on NOLA Gold at Veterans Memorial Stadium—fans can donate new, unused and unopened socks upon entry. Every donation will enter you into a raffle for a signed Free Jacks jersey!

Why Socks Matter

Socks are the #1 most requested item in shelters across the country. By donating, you’re helping those in need stay warm and comfortable. Last year, Free Jacks fans contributed 1,654 pairs of socks—this year, we aim to top that number and provide even more support to our community!

Operation Sock Drop 2025 – FAQ

What can I donate?
Fans can donate new, unused socks in their original packaging. We welcome all sizes and brands for men, women, and children.

Do they have to be Free Jacks socks?
Nope! Any brand and size are welcome, as long as they are new and unworn.

How do I enter the signed jersey raffle?
Each pair of socks donated earns you one entry into the raffle. The more you donate, the more chances you have to win!

Where do I drop off my socks?
Donation bins will be located at the stadium entrance. Our staff will collect your socks and record your donation for the raffle.

When will the winner be announced?
The raffle winner will be announced before the end of the Free Jacks Festival.

The reigning back-to-back Major League Rugby champions will hit the pitch on Saturday, March 8, at 10:00 PM EST at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Washington, with live coverage on ESPN+ and NBC Sports Boston.

The Free Jacks and Seawolves share a deep competitive history, meeting most recently in the 2024 MLR Final, where New England triumphed to claim the Shield. However, the last regular-season clash between these two powerhouses saw Seattle emerge victorious in Quincy, reclaiming the Coffee Cup. With a 4-2 overall record favoring New England, the Free Jacks remain undefeated at Starfire Stadium—a streak they aim to extend in this high-stakes battle.

Players to Watch

Two key players making their return to the lineup could provide a major boost for New England:

• Jone Koroiduadua (Prop): A powerhouse in the scrum, Koroiduadua’s presence will be crucial in maintaining forward dominance against Seattle’s physical pack.

Joe Johnston Joins the 50-Cap Club: A Testament to Grit, Leadership, and Legacy

A select few have left an indelible mark on the New England Free Jacks—players who define the club’s DNA, inspire their teammates, and bring fans to their feet. Joe “The Mechanic” Johnston is one of those players. As he reaches his 50th cap for the Free Jacks, Johnston joins an exclusive group of franchise legends: John Poland, Josh Larsen, Mitch Wilson, and Kyle Ciquera, who have reached this prestigious milestone. To those in the know Joe is the original minuteman. 

Since arriving in New England in 2021, Johnston has been the embodiment of hard work and resilience. A true workhorse in the back row, he has built a reputation for his tireless motor, high tackle rate, and ability to lead by example. His presence on the pitch is undeniable, whether breaking down opposition attacks, securing key turnovers, or delivering bone-rattling tackles, Johnston’s impact is felt in every match he plays.

Johnston’s contributions were vital to the Free Jacks’ first-ever MLR Championship in 2023. He was a core part of the squad that battled its way to the title. Johnston’s stoic mindset was highlighted that season, appearing in cameos off the bench for most of the season, before earning a start in the Championship match against San Diego. His performances throughout that campaign reinforced what Free Jacks fans already knew, Joe Johnston is a player built for big moments.

Beyond the crazy statistics and accolades, Johnston’s influence extends far beyond the pitch. Captaining the side this season, Johnston is a mentor to younger players, and a warrior who embodies the Free Jacks’ fighting spirit. His commitment was recognized in 2021 and 2023 when he was awarded the coveted Minuteman Award two-times, an honor reserved for those who best put the team before self. 

Boston Born, Joe Johnston’s path to the Free Jacks began in New Zealand, where he made a name for himself within the New Zealand age grade system, and with Bay of Plenty in the Mitre 10 Cup. His performances overseas caught the attention of the Free Jacks, leading to his move to New England, a place with deep family ties. Joe’s mother grew up in Boston and his father played rugby in the New England region. Over the years, Johnston has forged his own legacy in the region, becoming a fan favorite and a true Free Jack at heart.

As the Free Jacks continue their 2025 campaign, Johnston’s 50th cap is not just a personal milestone, it’s a reminder of the culture and foundation that he, and others like him, have helped to build.

With Johnston at the helm, the Free Jacks are in good hands. The Mechanic isn’t done yet, he’s just getting started.

In spring 2024, Free Jacks announced a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester (BGCD).

This partnership set out to give young people with physical and developmental disabilities from Dorchester and surrounding towns a chance to participate in rugby. “BGCD’s inclusion program is widely respected for its innovation and breadth of services,” notes BGCD CEO Bob Scannell in April 2024. “We look forward to working alongside the New England Free Jacks to bring another exceptional inclusive program to life.”

The initiative was created to support one of the team’s founding principles: to help build better local communities through inclusive, fun, and sustainable events and initiatives.

Leader of the Free Jacks Academy and Community Thomas Grant delivered the program over 8 weeks alongside Free Jacks coaches and players. “Rugby is a sport for everyone, regardless of ability,” says Grant. “We are excited to partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester to elevate our community impact and introduce more youth to this incredible game.”

Why it Matters to the Free Jacks and the Community

Free Jack’s relationship with BGCD allows the club to introduce the sport of rugby to kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity. It’s not just about teaching the game; it’s about using rugby as a way to build confidence, encourage inclusion, and foster a sense of belonging. The Free Jacks believe that the life lessons learned through rugby, such as working together, respecting one another, and staying resilient, are lessons that can help kids and adults far beyond the field.

The Inclusion Rugby Initiative, brings Free Jacks players and coaches to BGCD to work directly with the young people. From hands-on skills sessions to leadership activities, these moments of connection aim to provide much more than athletic training. It’s about creating positive experiences and inspiring young people to feel confident in themselves and their abilities.

A recent Instagram post shared by BGCD captured the enthusiasm of the kids as they stepped onto the field, many of them experiencing rugby for the first time. “Seeing their smiles and energy reminds us why this work is such important” Remarked Thomas Grant (source: @bgcdorchester Instagram).

Values in Action

For the Free Jacks, community involvement starts with the individuals who represent us. “We don’t just select players for their skill on the field; we choose people who are kind-hearted, grounded, and eager to contribute to our community” said Tom Kindley, General Manager. “Our values of respect, teamwork, and humility guide us in everything we do, and we seek out players who live these qualities” he added.

These values are embodied by players Like Ben Lesage, the 2024 Major League Rugby S. Marcus Calloway Community Impact Award and Coach at the BGCD. 

“When our players visit the Boys and Girls Club of Dorchester, they aren’t just athletes—they’re role models. They take the time to connect with the young people, not just teaching them the game, but also showing them what it means to be part of a team.” Said Thomas Grant

Thomas explained that Players like Andrew Quattrin, John Poland and Wian Conradie, who have taken part in BGCD programs, have helped to make these experiences special for the participating young people. 

“We’re proud of their commitment to giving back” said Thomas Grant “I’d also like to thank Ronan Griffin of the Irish WolfHounds Rugby Club for donating his time”.

Small Steps, Big Impact

The work the Free Jacks are doing with BGCD is just one piece of a larger puzzle. Their Community and Academy Programs have reached countless young people across New England, providing them with opportunities to experience rugby and learn from positive role models. “We don’t claim to be changing the world, but we’re proud to be doing our part to make a difference within our local communities” said Thomas Grant. 

“Whether it’s through after-school programs or weekend clinics, we hope to inspire young people and provide them with opportunities to grow. And we know that, through partnerships like this one, we’re building stronger connections within the community.”

Most recently the Free Jacks have partnered with Massachusetts Lottery to bring a community initiative called Impact Free Jack Outstanding Community Honoree Awards.
