Nate Brakeley, USA Eagle and USA Rugby Icon Confirmed as New England Free Jacks U23’s Coach

Free Jacks Academy Announcement

In an exciting development for New England rugby, the New England Free Jacks are proud to announce that Nate Brakeley, a USA Eagles veteran and rugby icon, has been confirmed as the new coach for the Free Jacks U23 Academy squad, the Independents, joining Boston Irish Wolfhounds head coach Liam Swanton and local Collegiate and Club figures Thomas Clark and Ed Tubridy. With a distinguished career that spans across both academic and professional rugby, Brakeley is set to lead the next generation of rugby talent in New England.

Brakeley’s rugby career is nothing short of remarkable. Starting his rugby journey at Dartmouth College, he was instrumental in securing two Collegiate Rugby Championship Sevens titles in 2011 and 2012. His leadership on the field continued as he played for the prestigious Cambridge University in the Varsity Match against Oxford before returning to the U.S. to win the USA Club Rugby National Championship with the New York Athletic Club in 2015. As part of Rugby New York in Major League Rugby since its inception, he earned 65 caps, served as team captain, and was named to the MLR All-First Team in 2019 and 2021.

On the international stage, Brakeley earned 34 caps with the USA Eagles after debuting in 2016, and represented the U.S. in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. In his final two matches, he captained the side to two wins over Brazil and Spain. His work ethic, both on and off the field, was evident as he balanced his rugby commitments with a full-time role as a data analyst in Manhattan.

Brakeley’s journey through both academic and professional rugby has been remarkable, with achievements at the collegiate, club, national, and international levels. His mentorship and leadership roles, particularly in the context of Rugby New York and the wider U.S. rugby landscape, have been crucial in shaping the next generation of players. As he takes on the coaching and development of the Free Jacks Independents U23’s, he will be continuing a legacy of shaping rugby in the USA.

Brakeley’s coaching philosophy has been deeply influenced by his experiences as both a player and a mentor. Known for his strategic acumen and dedication to player development, he is committed to fostering the growth of young athletes in the New England rugby community. Under his leadership, the Free Jacks U23 squad is poised to develop into a key pipeline for future professional talent.

“I’m thrilled to take on this new challenge with the Free Jacks and contribute to the ongoing development of rugby in New England, where my own personal journey started as well,” said Brakeley. “The U23 program is critical in providing opportunities for young players to transition into professional rugby, and I’m excited to help guide them on that journey.”

His unique blend of playing experience, academic excellence, and leadership ensures that the next generation of New England rugby players will be in excellent hands.

“To have a coach with Nate’s experience both on the International stage and within the American pathways system will be game changing for the Free Jacks academy and will set up the next generation and development of local talent with a focus on elevating players to the highest level.  We are very fortunate that Nate wants to give back to the game that gave him so much and we are excited to welcome him into our club”
