The US born physical performance expert brings his NPC and Super Rugby coaching experience to the MLR in 2022

Boston, MA — December 27, 2021 — The Free Jacks are proud to announce the hiring of former Otago Head of Strength and Conditioning, Ewan Brumwell. He will be stepping into the lead Strength and Conditioning role as the team moves from Newton to Quincy, taking the reins from Jared Collinson who has run the program for the team since 2018. With the 2022 season just around the corner, New England gains NPC coaching experience in Brumwell who looks to prepare the Free Jacks for the hard-fought matches ahead.

“The Free Jacks have an exciting coaching and management group which I am looking forward to becoming a part of,” exclaimed Brumwell. “The next chapter in my coaching career is going to be a good one!”

Brumwell first began his strength and conditioning coaching journey as an intern with Otago Rugby in 2014. After proving his potential, Ewan was hired as the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Otago Academy team where he remained for 5 years while also assisting with the NPC squad.

In 2016, Brumwell was appointed Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach with the Highlanders in Super Rugby, where he stayed until 2017. He was also Head of S&C for the New Zealand Secondary Schools team for 2 years from 2017 to 2018.

Brumwell developed his trade within these roles at the spearhead of New Zealand rugby, earning himself the position of Head of Strength and Conditioning at Otago Rugby in 2020 and 2021.

“I’d first like to thank the predecessor Jared Collinson for his tireless efforts running a great strength and conditioning operation for the Free Jacks alongside his own business since our inception,” commented Free Jacks Performance Director, Tom Kindley.

“Turning the page to our new chapter in Quincy, it’s great to still have Jared around in some capacity as someone grandfathered into the club; it’s fantastic to have Ewan appointed as our first ever full-time Head of Strength and Conditioning.”

“Ewan will bring with him 8 years of experience within top class strength and conditioning programs across the NPC, Super Rugby, and the U20 programs in New Zealand. I expect to see an uptick in performance across the board with not only the physical standards of our senior team but also the ability to merge rugby programming with loading parameters, something the NZ system does so well. We will be looking to streamline within our academy system and bolster the strength and conditioning IP in the game across the region.”

Steadily climbing the coaching ladder since his inception as an Otago intern in 2014, Brumwell has amassed plenty of New Zealand coaching experience on his way to Head of S&C in Otago. A promising acquisition to the Free Jacks coaching staff, look to see the squad in impeccable condition as we head into the 2022 season.
