Free Jacks Announce Chicago Hounds Hooker Mason Koch
The American Collegiate Product is Ready to Make an Impact in 2024
Today the New England Free Jacks announced the signing of Iowa-native Mason Koch from the Chicago Hounds. The All-American hooker began his rugby journey in Coralville, IA, where he captained his high school side. Upon graduating, he was recruited to Dartmouth College for football but instead committed himself to rugby where he played a major role in securing the Ivy League Championship four years in a row for the Big Green, captaining the team in his senior year to their first NCAA D1AA championship.
“Mason is a prospect we’ve had eyes on since graduating as a talented New England collegiate athlete,” said General Manager Tom Kindley. “An intelligent player and individual, we know Mason will be a good environmental fit. Mason has gained valuable experience during his three MLR seasons to date and we look forward to seeing him express that in a New England jersey.”
Drawing MLR looks for his set piece and open play ability, Koch was selected by the Austin Gilgronis in the 2020 MLR Draft. During his first start in Austin, Koch burst onto the scene, scoring 2 tries and earning himself MLR Player of the Week honors. Following two successful years in Austin, Koch was drafted to the Chicago Hounds for their inaugural season, where he made 8 appearances, and scored 3 tries.
“New England sports culture has some of the most devoted fans, deepest histories, and bitter rivalries among any other place in the world,” said Koch. “Having experienced that during my college years, I’m excited to get back and be a part of all those things once again.”
Outside of rugby, Koch enjoys hiking, fishing, and reading in off time. While acquiring his bachelor’s degree in biology, he studied protein misfolding diseases and octopus psychology. He lists one of his greatest achievements as memorizing a two-volume encyclopedia of dinosaurs by heart as a young child.
