Free Jacks fall short to Miami Sharks
The New England Free Jacks visited the Miami Sharks on Friday and after last week’s 27-17 win against Chicago, New England was riding the high of their seventh straight win. On short rest, the Free Jacks started 10 new players against the increasingly tough Sharks.
The Sharks put the first points of the game on the board with a penalty kick by Shane O’Leary at five minutes. Just two minutes later, Marcus Young added a try, but O’Leary missed the conversion, bringing the first score to 8-0 in favor of Miami.
At 23 minutes, Prop Tevita Sole scored for the Free Jacks, and Dan Hollinshead made the conversion, adding New England’s only points for the first half. The score was the result of the Sole’s hustling from mid-field to collect a Sharks’ miscue from inside the 22 meter line to dot down a diving try.
Trailing 13-7 at the half, Free Jacks Wian Conradie scored two second half tries. Hollinshead added a conversion, but the 12 points would not push the Free Jacks past Miami which added 17 points on tries by Guiseppe du Toit try (O’Leary conversion and Matías Orlando try (O’Leary conversion) and an O’Leary penalty goal.
Despite Friday’s 30-19 loss, the Free Jacks (9-0-4, 45 points) remain in first place in the Eastern Conference and have a clinched a coveted spot in the playoffs. The Free Jacks will return home next Saturday, at 5pm, where they will take on Old Glory DC at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium.

She’s very excited for the opportunity to work with the Free Jacks as a news bureau reporter to learn more about the sport of rugby while also being able to write about it. She didn’t picture herself ever being a sports writer, but she’s grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in her writing. She’s also very excited that her writing will help bring the community closer to the Free Jacks and bring them the recognition that they so well deserve.
