Hinshaw re-signs with the Free Jacks through the 2022 season

BOSTON – August 26, 2020 – Steven Hinshaw has re-signed with the Free Jacks for the 2021 and 2022 seasons of Major League Rugby. The 24-year-old, 6’2, 240lb hooker made four appearances during the 2020 season for the Free Jacks and was an integral part of the side during the 2018 and 2019 exhibition season and Cara Cup.

“When I say this is a dream come true, it is an understatement,” exclaimed Hinshaw. “I am excited and humbled to continue my journey with the most promising organization in American Rugby. To the hardworking people of Boston, I will give you every ounce of work and passion that I have in me to bring home a championship, but more importantly, do my utmost to engage with and drive forward the wonderful communities in New England.”

Hinshaw is an energetic and powerful hooker who thrives on the collision element of the game. Having played 11 games for the Free Jacks to date, Hinshaw had a standout Cara Cup against the Irish province sides in 2019, averaging 10 tackles (25% dominant) and 5 carries per game. Hinshaw made 4 appearances off the bench during the abbreviated 2020 season, injecting a flurry of speed and physicality every appearance and scored his first try for the Free Jacks against Seattle in the round 4 clash at Starfire Stadium.

“Steve personifies what we look for from our playing group through his work rate, willingness to learn, and genuine love for what he does,” said Free Jacks Performance Manager, Tom Kindley. “Having only found the sport as a Freshman in College, Steve is only beginning to untap the colossal potential at his disposal. A converted back rower, he is a ball carrying and defensive force, and comes to ‘work’ with a smile on his face every day without fail. With some fine tuning he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in 2021.”

Born in Mishawaka, Indiana, the youngest of 7 siblings, native of La Jolla, CA, Hinshaw grew up playing baseball and football at the Bishop School in San Diego. He graduated Magna cum Laude in Economics from Dartmouth College in 2018 and served as Co-Captain of Dartmouth Rugby, perennial Ivy league champions. Hinshaw currently works for a management consulting firm part-time and plans to go to Veterinary school with ambitions of working with ‘big animals’ in the near future.
