Newcomer will remain in New England through the 2023 season of Major League Rugby

BOSTON – September 10, 2020 – The New England Free Jacks are excited to announce the re-signing of promising tighthead prop, Quentin Newcomer. The three-year contract extension is a testament to the work ethic and growth Newcomer has shown and indicative of the Free Jacks desire to invest in his player development in the coming years. The 24-year-old, 6’1, 260lb, tighthead specialist will be returning for his third season with the New England franchise for the 2021 season of Major League Rugby.

“I’m very grateful for the Free Jacks taking a chance on me back in their inception and molding me into the player I am today,” said Newcomer. “I’m really looking forward to this season, continuing to learn and grow as a player and getting stuck in with the team.”

Previously a loosehead, Newcomer made three appearances for the Free Jacks in the Cara Cup, coming off the bench against Munster, Ulster and Leinster in his first taste of professional rugby. Following the exhibition season, Newcomer took an opportunity to play for Sumner Rugby Football Club in New  Zealand where he honed his scrummaging ability with teammates Ollie Dawe, of Bristol Bears, and Samuela Tawake, of Manawatu Turbos and the Fijian national team, going on to impress in the Canterbury premier club division.

Newcomer showed signs of his potential in the abbreviated inaugural season with the Free Jacks in 2020. Newcomer made four appearances off the bench in the final four games of the season demonstrating his knack for breaking the gainline with 10 carries for 41 meters and love for collisions with 29% of tackles dominant in nature.

“Quentin has been a sponge in our environment, soaking up all information thrown at him,” commented Performance Manager, Tom Kindley. “Unbelievably, this year was only his third playing the sport and for Quentin to go out there and compete with the big boys at scrum time and around the field in the MLR was a testament to his application since joining us in 2019. At a herculean 260lbs, he is a student of the scrum and has a massive career ahead.”

Quentin is from Fairfax, Virginia and attended Oakton High School in Oakton, Virginia. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University from 2015 – 2018, majoring in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Quentin began playing rugby three years ago with Steamboat Springs rugby club for two seasons in the Rocky Mountain League, he also played for James River Rugby club.
