Impact Free Jack: Josh Rocha, Alex Bett and the Just Talk Veteran Podcast
The New England Free Jacks are proud to introduce Josh Rocha and Alex Bett as honorees for the Impact Free Jack award.
In the heart of Massachusetts, a unique and impactful podcasting venture was started by Alex Bett; the Just Talk with Alex Bett podcast on Spotify. On his podcast, Alex would invite friends to share their story and project a message of truth, healing, and mindfulness.
Alex Bett, originally hailing from Winchester, England, moved to Massachusetts during his elementary school years. Despite the move, he maintains a strong connection to his roots, traveling back to Winchester during the summers. His diverse background and experiences have significantly contributed to the podcast’s global appeal and reach.
The “Just Talk” name holds a special place in Alex Bett’s heart, as it was originally the name of his band that once toured the country. Transitioning this name to the podcast world, Alex aimed to create a space where open conversations could thrive. His background in AV equipment and sound engineering has been instrumental in ensuring the podcast’s high production quality, making it accessible and engaging for listeners worldwide.
One day, Alex was introduced to Josh Rocha, a decorated Iraq War veteran and Massachusetts native. Josh was a respected youth football coach in Mansfield, MA, and served as a Correctional Officer for many years. His military service in Iraq exposed him to the hazardous conditions of burn pits, which have since had profound effects on his health. Burn pits, used by the U.S. military to dispose of waste in Iraq and Afghanistan, released toxic chemicals into the air, leading to severe health issues for many veterans, including Josh.
The toxic exposure from burn pits resulted in Josh suffering a brain tumor and subsequent brain surgery to have it removed , impacting his mobility. Despite these challenges, Josh’s resilience shines through. He is a proud father of two sons and continues to inspire others with his story. Additionally, Josh has a rugby background that includes playing for the Boston Irish Greyhounds rugby club, the Old Boys affiliate of the Wolfhounds.
Once Alex had Josh on his podcast, the two hit it off, sharing meaningful stories that spread awareness about mental health and ‘just talking’ to your neighbor. Josh also wanted to create the foundations of an organization that connects veterans with free transitional housing and build a community across the country and the world where veterans can speak to each other. Shortly after hearing this proposal, Alex had the idea of starting the “Just Talk Veterans” podcast, a stepping stone to the larger foundation. And just like that, the podcast began, and a platform was designed to provide a voice to veterans and facilitate their healing through shared experiences.
Understanding the importance of community and connection, Josh has taken the initiative to create social media pages for Just Talk Veterans, further expanding its reach and impact. These platforms serve as a hub for veterans to connect, share their stories, and support one another. The podcast has grown into a grassroots community where veterans can engage on Discord, Facebook, and through Sunday gatherings organized by Josh.
Today, Josh resides in New Hampshire, continuing to lead and inspire through “Just Talk Veterans.” The podcast not only provides a therapeutic outlet for veterans but also raises awareness about the ongoing challenges they face, particularly those related to burn pit exposure.
One day, Josh hopes to travel the country with his organization and spread love, joy, and peace to veterans across the United States. Through their collaborative efforts, Alex and Josh have created a powerful platform that resonates with veterans and their families, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support.
The “Just Talk Veterans” podcast, born from the friendship and shared vision of Josh Rocha and Alex Bett, stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and community. It offers a vital space for veterans to heal, connect, and advocate for their well-being, ensuring that their voices are heard and their experiences honored.
When Josh and Alex were honored at the Free Jacks match versus Houston on May 10th, the two hosts were prepared with their podcast materials and set up in a tent beside the post-game festivities occurring on the pitch. Josh and Alex interviewed Free Jack Joe Johnston and Free Jacks’ Director of Community & Entertainment, Thomas Grant, along with more of the match day staff.
On Saturday, May 24th, Josh and friends will be at the Free Jacks to record a special Tribute to Troops festival edition of the Just Talk Veterans podcast. Feel free to come up to their tent at the festival pre-game and share your stories, especially if you are a veteran!
