Back from a productive ‘21 season, Wilson returns to excite in 2022

Boston, MA — October 6, 2021 — The New England Free Jacks welcome back Australian born utility back Mitch Wilson for the 2022 Major League Rugby season. Coming off of a productive 2021, the 5’9, 175 lb back looks to speed past the MLR competition in the upcoming year.

“I’m looking forward to building off a relatively successful 2021,” noted Mitch. “ I’m excited to be more involved with the community in Quincy and give our supporters performances they’re proud of.”

Wilson’s versatility came to be a sizeable advantage to the Free Jacks lineup as he found himself playing both sides of the wing throughout the season as well as occasionally dropping back to fullback. Though smaller in stature, Wilson used his speed to his advantage on the pitch, finishing the season with 3 tries and 358 carry meters. Along the way Wilson broke 18 tackles, proving to be a pesky player to drag down.

“Mitch has become an integral part of the roster, progressing quickly from a Collegiate All-American to a leader among the Free Jacks within a couple of seasons,” stated Free Jacks Performance Director, Tom Kindley. “A brave and versatile back three player, Mitch has a sound skill set and is taking leaps and bounds each season. Etched in the history books as the Free Jacks first ever try scorer, we are looking forward to seeing his career continue at the same trajectory.”

Moving to the United States in the beginning of his high school years, Wilson could be considered a local as much as he is an international player. While studying at Life University in Marietta, Georgia, Wilson led the Running Eagles to one of their most successful periods in the history of the program, winning the D1A National Championships in 2016, 2018, and 2019. He served as captain from 2017-2019. In 2018, Wilson captained the Collegiate All-American team, defeating the Glendale Raptors, and represented the USA Selects in Montevideo in the Americas Pacific Challenge.

With a wealth of experience from youth to his collegiate years to the MLR, we are ecstatic to see the still youthful back build upon his progress in the upcoming season. In 2020, Wilson scored the first ever Free Jacks try in MLR history, expect more of these tries from Mitch in 2022.
