The Return of The Mechanic: Joe Johnston added to the Free Jacks 2025 Roster
The New England Free Jacks are thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of Joe “The Mechanic” Johnston for the 2025 season. A fan favorite and defensive powerhouse, Johnston’s rejoining the squad marks an exciting chapter for Free Jacks fans and the team alike. Known for his relentless work rate, unmatched tenacity, and infectious leadership, Johnston’s return is sure to electrify Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Johnston’s Free Jacks journey has been one of dedication and impact. Since first joining in 2021, he quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the team, playing in 95% of the matches across three standout seasons. After stepping away from the Free Jacks in 2024 to focus on his studies and play rugby back in New Zealand with Bay of Plenty, Joe is ready to pick up where he left off in New England. His return not only strengthens the Free Jacks’ forward pack, but brings back a leader who knows the heart and soul of this team.
Coming back to Boston didn’t happen by chance. Boston is the city where Johnston’s mother, Ginny, grew up. Back in 2021 a move to MLR offered the kiwi the opportunity to not only play rugby but reconnect with family.
“I am really excited to be returning to the Free Jacks in 2025. My experience playing rugby in Boston was a big part of my career and something I wanted to continue with. It was unreal watching the boys go back to back and hopefully I can come back and add to another successful campaign.
