Hailing from Pretoria, South Africa, Van der Bank was a part of the Golden Lions academy system where he first played for the Golden Lions XV in the Rugby Challenge in 2017. Two years later he got his first team call up and made his debut for the Lions in the Currie Cup. He signed for the Pumas also in the Currie Cup for the next season, before making the move to New England in 2022.
