Veteran scrum-half John Poland sustains a season ending injury

It is with regret that the New England Free Jacks announce that star scrum-half John Poland (Free Jack #9) has incurred a significant pectoral injury that will keep him out-of-action for the remainder of the 2024 Major League Rugby season. The 27-year-old sustained the injury during the Round 3, St Patrick’s Day Festival against NOLA Gold on March 16, 2024.

John received successful surgery earlier this week and is on the road to recovery.

“We feel for JP, he is a brilliant man and player, and has given so much to our club on and off the field over the past 5 seasons,” commented General Manager, Tom Kindley. “While he won’t take part in remaining matches this season, JP will remain an important member of our squad and will continue to make a significant impact on our on-field performance and organization. We will be doing everything we can to support him as he works through his recovery process.”

The 27-year old native of Cork, Ireland is one of four original players who have been with the side since the inaugural 2020 season.

JP was the first New England Free Jack to make 50 appearances for the club, doing so in last year’s Eastern Conference Championship. Over the past 5 seasons, John has made 54 appearances, scoring 18 tries and notching 120 points. Notably JP played a lead role in the championship winning 2023 season and championship game against Chicago last season.

Renowned across Major League Rugby for his composure, excellent tactical kicking and finishing ability, JP has established himself as one of the premier scrum halves in the competition. As important, JP’s unwavering dedication and leadership to our community, local game and supporters off the field is well demonstrated by how fondly he is regarded by Free Jacks supporters.

At this time, our focus is on John’s well-being and ensuring that he receives the necessary care and support during his recovery process.

We ask for your continued support and encouragement for John. Let us rally behind him as he embarks on his journey to recovery, knowing that he will return stronger and more determined than ever.
