In a season filled with remarkable milestones, this Saturday’s Eastern Conference Final will mark an extraordinary achievement for Josh Larsen as he steps onto the field for his 50th cap with the New England Free Jacks. From his roots in Nanaimo, BC, Canada, to the rugby pitches of Paihia, New Zealand, Larsen’s journey has been nothing short of exceptional.
Larsen, affectionately known as Free Jack #1, has been a cornerstone of the team since its inception, leading by example both on and off the field. Born and raised in Canada before moving to New Zealand, he honed his skills at Mount Albert Grammar School in Auckland and later pursued a degree in Commerce at the University of Otago.
His international career began with representing Canada U-20 at the Junior World Trophy in 2014, followed by his senior debut against the formidable New Zealand Maori in 2017. Larsen earned his first full Test cap on November 11th, 2017.

Transitioning into the professional arena, Larsen made waves in New Zealand’s NPC with Northland and Otago before making his mark in Major League Rugby with the Austin Elite in 2019. His journey continued as he joined the Free Jacks for their inaugural season in 2020, where he not only played a key role in the second row, but also took on the responsibility of captaining the squad.
Larsen is described by his teammates and coaches as a relentless force on the field.His trademark collision and breakdown physicality have consistently set the standard for his teammates to follow. Off the field, his influence as club captain has been equally important, fostering a culture of camaraderie and dedication within the Free Jacks, playing an important role in ensuring all players are well positioned to thrive in the Free Jacks environment.

The Eastern Conference Final kicks off from Veterans Memorial Stadium at 11am on July 20th. Before the Free Jacks match you can grab a beer and listen to Live Music!
