Major League Rugby (MLR) continues to lead the charge in evolving the game for fans and players alike, with a focus on creating a faster, more fluid spectacle. Building on the successful law trials introduced in 2024, the 2025 season will see the implementation of several new laws designed to reduce stoppages and maintain the game’s relentless pace.

Here’s a breakdown of the new laws for 2025:

New Laws for 2025:

• Law 11.2: Removal of the Scrum Option on a Knock/Throw Forward Into Touch
  A knock-on or throw-forward into touch will now result in a lineout only, removing the scrum option to keep the game moving.

• Law 12A: Knock or Throw Forward Into In-Goal
  When the ball is knocked or thrown forward into the in-goal area and grounded by either team, the result will be a goal-line dropout, eliminating the scrum as a restart option.

• Law 15.17: Failure to Play the Ball Within 5 Seconds
  If a team fails to play the ball within 5 seconds of the referee’s “use it” call, the sanction will now be a free kick (FK) instead of a scrum.

• Law 16.17: Unsuccessful End to a Maul
  If a maul ends unsuccessfully, the restart will now be a free kick (FK) rather than a scrum.

Laws Continuing from 2024:

• Law 9.30: Red Card Replacement Rule
  Teams can replace a red-carded player after 20 minutes, ensuring the game remains competitive.

• Law 8.B(b): Automatic 7 Points for Tries Beneath the Posts
  Tries scored directly beneath the goalposts will be worth an automatic 7 points, extending to the dead-ball line, speeding up conversions.

• Law 20.3: Limiting Scrums Following Penalty Kicks
  Teams awarded a penalty kick at a scrum will no longer be able to opt for a further scrum at the reset.

These adjustments reflect MLR’s ongoing commitment to improving the flow and speed of the game, making matches more engaging for spectators while maintaining the integrity of rugby’s core principles. By reducing stoppages and creating quicker restarts, the league aims to enhance the fan experience both in the stadium and on broadcasts.
